Hideaway Lake and Surroundings

Summer Solstice weekend - the perfect time to head out for a couple days to camp on a little lake on Mount Hood.  We ate well.  We went on a beautiful hike.  We napped on big rocks warmed by the sun.  We stayed up late by the campfire.  We read a lot (I'm loving Canada by Richard Ford).  We woke up early and soaked in nearby hot springs.  We drank cup after cup of coffee.  We hung out on the Clackamas River.  We swatted endless mosquitoes.  It was just right.

Not Making the Cut

We've collected a lot of metal stuff over the years.  We've been suckers for old, industrial-feeling, worn things for a couple decades now.  When we came across metal with red paint on it, it was practically irresistible to us.  It's time to cut some loose.  We're holding on to some of the bigger pieces - stools, shelves, the mixer attachment.  But we're getting rid of some of the little decorative pieces that we found at flea markets and junk stores.  Each of these pieces reminds me of somewhere we lived, somewhere we traveled, something we did.  But as my sister told her son (who has a really hard time getting rid of anything) - the memories don't live in the things we keep, they live in our heads and hearts.

There's Another Lutjen Out There

Congratulations to my brother and sister-in-law who had a beautiful baby on Monday.  I can't wait to meet Nico, and to give his big brother Luca a squeeze, too.  I miss my family a lot.  The distance between us is tough.

So, in my usual form, I've been fussing with the apartment a bunch.  Moving plants around, angling furniture in different ways, getting rid of a few things.  Still trying to figure out to do with the nook right above where my work table used to be.  Poking at stuff in our physical space while I figure out things in my head.

Freezerful of Compost

We keep a container under the kitchen sink in which we collect food scraps for compost.  We don't have a yard and we don't have compost pick-up at our apartment building, so when our little container is full I dump the contents into a produce bag and pop it in the freezer to keep it from getting stinky.  When a few bags accumulate, I bring them to friends who put the contents in their own yard bins.  Every once in a while, I forget to make the hand off.  And the compost bags pile up.  While getting ready for Barry's parents' visit, I realized I hadn't made a compost hand off in far too long.  I couldn't believe that we had room for anything else in the freezer when I pulled all of the compost bags out.   And I can't believe that we used to fill up garbage bags with all of this stuff for years.

Good, Long Days

We've had such amazing weather, gorgeous light, and lengthy days recently.  I love the two or three hours after I come home at the end of a work day.  Our fourth floor, west-facing apartment is bathed in light until the sun sets.  Then we get spectacular shows.

Those flower are from Barry's parents who were in town last week.  In our usual fashion, the four of us ate well.  Ava Gene's and Navarre are go-to favorites.  We enjoyed good times, good food, and good drinks at La Taq and Nonna as well.

Something I've Been Thinking About Lately

Humility and modesty are beautiful qualities to me.
I'm trying to practice them more myself.
And I wish I ran into them a little more often.
Maybe I do run into them a lot and I just don't know it.
I guess those qualities are funny like that.

Camping Season 2014

It started in earnest last weekend.  On our days off, we've been hanging out on the east side of Mount Hood, riding bikes, cooking over campfires, reading by the light of our headlamps, and generally loving getting out of town.  The ease of getting to the wilderness is one of my favorite things about living where we do.

Another favorite thing?  Getting home on day two of our weekend with enough time and sunlight remaining to stroll around a bit and talk about our adventures over a meal at a fantastic restaurant.
